Gazette Update: Snow & Bad Weather warning extended:

MONTREAL – Motorists braced for a rush-hour nightmare Wednesday afternoon – expected to be worse than a morning run that triggered numerous fender-benders and worse.

Adding to the promised traffic woes was a freshly extended winter storm warning.

Winds are gusting to 60 kilometres an hour.

About 3:30 p.m., Environment Canada forecast “5 to 10 centimetres of additional snow with zero visibility in blowing snow, until tonight.”

The storm began in earnest at 6:30 a.m.

The formal storm alert was invoked by forecasters just before 11 a.m.

By the time the alert was extended, the region had already been blanketed with 16 centimetres.

The most dramatic morning fallout included three chain-reaction highway smash-ups in the Montreal region.

The biggest, on the South Shore, took place about 10:45 a.m. and damaged about 70 vehicles, some 30 tractor-trailers and a school bus among them, said Constable Daniel Thibeaudeau of the Sûreté du Québec.

There were no major injuries, and three minor ones, Thibeaudeau added, adding that a large number of emergency workers were deployed on the scene.

The vehicular carnage included a number of jackknifed heavy vehicles. It stretched along 1.5 kilometres of the eastbound Highway 20 near Ste. Julie.

Drivers and passengers in some 100 vehicles, which had been behind them, were bottlenecked, immobilized for at least six hours.

The way out for them “won’t be cleared up before 6 p.m.,” Thibeaudeau predicted just before 5 p.m.
