Roots Beneath The Pavement

This book was written by M. Laurel Buck, It is a "memoir" of her growing up on Claude Street in Verdun in the 1930s. She has supplied the following excerpt to be posted here at Verdun Connections:
from "Lost Home, Lost Child"
To the child in transition from farm to city, the hard compression of paved streets and sidewalks, and of people, pressed close in cage-like flats was a contrast, hardly to be borne. But, always, she kept close in her heart the first home she could remember. There, she had claimed the spacious farmhouse, bult over a stream in the Quebec Appalachians of Megantic County, a place of steep spring-filled hills, deep sugar-maple woods and the Bullard brook, meandering through the `flat'.
Every nook and cranny of the rooms, every road leading to and from the neighbours was imprinted in her memory. Indeed, during the remaining years of her childhood and on into youth, she would mark the passing of Time by her return every summer to the farm. There she was welcomed HOME, as much by the very elements of familiar earth, water, air and fire (in the ever-burning wood-stove) as by her grandparents, her extended family, the neighbours and the animals. At every level she felt known.
                    ...
She first experienced the press of people when her family, before they moved to Claude Street beside that fenced field [of the Waterworks], lived briefly in a flat on one of the long, numbered avenues. In a grid of parallel lines, running from the Aquaduct down to the St. Lawrence, on each avenue, up to four thousand people lived, `cheek by jowl'. "Who are all these people? Where do they all come from?" the child I was pondered gloomily.

The '20s and `30s had forced many of my parents' generation to leave the 160-acre farms of Quebec, incompatible with advanced mechanization. In Verdun they joined others, for example, some from the Maritimes and Newfoundland and some from Europe, seeking to exchange versions of the "dark satanic mills", all of them in need of a second chance. In fact, between 1910 and 1930, the population of Verdun increased five times, from a little over, 11,000 to nearly 55,000, swelling the numbers of newly arrived English-speaking people to equal those of their French-speaking neighbours.
Rental of Verdun's `cold- water flats' was relatively cheap. While Verdun was not industrialized, access to possible employment in Montreal could be handled by bus and streecar. However, the second chance was soon overwhelmed by the Great Depression, and the ensuing collapse of formerly buoyant industrialized cities, such as Montreal. What followed was the confinement of many to menial labour, at best, and long lines of the unemployed, at worst. Many workers, like my father would walk every day to and from work thereafter, seven days a week, twelve months a year. Ironically, no alleviation of the economy would surface until World War II broke out a decade later.

Merry Christmas from South Florida

Hi all, hope you've had a wonderful Xmas. No matter how much decor and such you do for the holiday, it still doesn't quite feel like xmas when it is 80 outside. My kids woke us up at 4:45 am, just like I used to do to my parents. You all know what they say about paybacks. It's been a long but lovely day anyways. Peace and happiness to all.

Merry Christmas Everyone

Hope that you all have a blessed Christmas and good times with family and friends.

Lenny Bruce

It was on this day in 1964 that comedian Lenny Bruce (books by this author) was sentenced to four months in jail for obscenity. At the time, Bruce was using profanity in his stand-up routine, and he talked openly about sex and made offensive jokes about race, politics, and religion. During the trial, a police witness described Bruce's performance to the court, and Bruce claimed that the man was trying to steal his act. Dozens of artists came to Bruce's defense, including Woody Allen, Bob Dylan, James Baldwin, and Allen Ginsberg. After the sentence, Lenny Bruce became obsessed with the trial and he gave up performing as a comedian and began reading the court transcripts to his audiences. He died two years later of a heroin overdose, still waiting to hear an appeal of his case. It wasn't until 2003 that Governor George Pataki granted him a posthumous pardon.

CHRISTMAS EATING TIPS

    1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a Holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

    2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare. You can't find it any other time of the year. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas.

    3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

    4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

    5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your appetite. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

    6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a ten pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

    7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you'll never see them again.

    8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two slices of apple and one of pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

    9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, It's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. Hey, Have some standards.

    10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry. January is just around the corner. And remember this motto to live by:

Life should not be a journey to the grave with
the intention of arriving safely in an attractive
and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly
used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO
           HOO what a ride!"

2 cents

A woman stopped by unannounced at her recently married son's house. She rang the doorbell and walked in.

She was shocked to see her daughter-in-law lying on the couch, totally naked. Soft music was playing, and the aroma of perfume filled the room.

'What are you doing?' she asked.

'I'm waiting for my husband to come home from work,' the daughter-in-law answered.

'But you're naked!' the mother-in-law exclaimed.

'This is my love dress,' the daughter-in-law explained.

'Love Dress? But you're naked!' the mother-in-law exclaimed.

'My husband loves me to wear this dress,' she explained. 'When he sees it, he instantly becomes romantic.'

The mother-in-law left. When she got home, she undressed, showered and put on her best perfume, dimmed the lights, put on a romantic CD and laid on the couch waiting for her husband to arrive.

Finally her husband came home. He walked in and saw her laying there so provocatively. 'What are you doing?' he asked.

'This is my love dress,' she whispered sensually.

'Needs ironing,' he said. 'What's for dinner?'

His funeral will be held this coming Thursday .. closed casket.

Horse Drawn Milk Wagon

Les,
One of our members (SHGV) is looking for a photo of a Borden Milk Wagon that delivered milk in the Champlain /Argyle/Champlain region in the early 60s. It had a large yellow flower wich was the Borden trade mark. The wagon had double doors on each side and was presumably the last horse drawn milk wagon in the Montreal region.. This would also be an excellant photo for our Archives.
As a trade off, here is a photo of an horse drawn Supreme bread wagon dated no. 5, 1938.

A CHRISTMAS TEAR-JERKER MAKES YOU SMILE WHILE CRYING.

IN THE NAME OF MY LORD & SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH.......

I read this many years ago and it still makes me cry

In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and Just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two. Their Dad had never been much more than a presence they feared. Whenever they heard his tires crunch on the gravel driveway they would Scramble to hide under their beds. He did manage to leave $15 a week to buy groceries. Now that he had decided to leave, there would be no more beatings, but No food either. If there was a welfare system in effect in southern Indiana at that Time, I certainly knew nothing about it. I scrubbed the kids until they looked brand new and then put on my best homemade dress, loaded them into the rusty old 51 Chevy and drove off to find a job. The seven of us went to every factory, store and restaurant in our Small town. No luck. The kids stayed crammed into the car and tried to be quiet while I Tried to convince who ever would listen that I was willing to learn or do anything. I had to have a job. Still no luck. The la St place we went to, just a few miles out of Town was an old Root Beer Barrel drive-in t hat had been converted to a truck Stop. It was called the Big Wheel. An old lady named Granny owned the place and she peeked out of the Window from time to time at all those kids. She needed someone on the graveyard shift, 11 at night until seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour, and I could start that night. I raced home and called the teenager down the street that baby-sat for People. I bargained with her to come and sleep on my sofa for a dollar a Night. She could arrive with her pajamas on and the kids would already be Asleep This seemed like a good arrangement to her, so we made a deal. That night when the little ones and I knelt to say our prayers, we all thanked God for finding Mommy a job. And so I started at the Big Wheel. When I got home in the mornings I woke the baby-sitter up and sent her Home with one dollar of my tip money-- fully half of what I averaged every Night. As the weeks went by, heating bills added a strain to my meagre wage. The tires on the old Chevy had the consistency of penny balloons and Began t o leak. I had to fill them with air on the way to work and again every morning before I could go home. One bleak fall morning, I dragged myself to the car to go home and found four tires in the back seat. New tires! There was no note, no nothing, and just those beautiful brand new tires. Had angels taken up residence in Indiana? I wondered. I made a deal with the local service station. In exchange for his mounting the new tires, I would clean up his Office. I remember it took me a lot longer to scrub his floor than it did for Him to do the tires. I was now working six nights instead of five and it still wasn't enough. Christmas was coming and I knew there would be no money for toys for the kids. I found a can of red paint and started repairing and painting some old Toys. Then I hid them in the basement so there would be something for Santa to deliver on Christmas morning. Clothes were a worry too. I was sewing patches on top of patches on the boys’ pants and soon they would be too far-gone to repair. On Christmas Eve the usual customers were drinking coffee in the Big Wheel.

There were the truckers, Les, Frank, and Jim, and a state trooper Named Joe. A few musicians were hanging around after a gig at the Legion and were dropping nickels in the pinball machine. The regulars all just sat around and talked through the wee hours of the morning and then left to get home before the sun came up. When it was time for me to go home at seven o'clock on Christmas Morning, to my amazement, my old battered Chevy was filled full to the top with Boxes of all shapes and sizes. I quickly opened the driver's side door, crawled inside and kneeled in the front facing the back seat. Reaching back, I pulled off the lid of the top box. Inside was whole case of little blue jeans, sizes 2-10! I looked inside another box: It was full of shirts to go with the jeans. Then I peeked inside some of the other boxes. There was candy and nuts and bananas and bags of groceries. There was an enormous ham for baking, and canned vegetables and potatoes. There was pudding and Jell-O and cookies, pie filling and flour. There was whole bag of laundry supplies and cleaning items. And there were five toy trucks and one beautiful little doll. As I drove back through empty streets as the sun slowly rose on the most amazing Christmas Day of my life, I was sobbing with gratitude. And I will never forget the joy on the faces of my little ones that precious morning. Yes, there were angels in Indiana that long-ago December. And they all hung out at the Big Wheel truck stop.... THE POWER OF PRAYER. I believe that Go d only gives three answers to prayer: 1. "Yes!" 2. "Not yet." 3. "I have something better in mind." God still sits on the throne, the devil is a liar. You maybe going through a tough time right now but God is getting ready to bless you in a way that you cannot imagine. My instructions were to pick four people that I wanted God to bless, and I picked you. Please pass this to at least four people you want to be blessed and a copy back to me. This prayer is powerful, and prayer is one of the best gifts we receive.

There is no cost but a lot of rewards Let's continue to pray for one another. Here is the prayer:.... Father, I ask You to bless my friends, relatives and email buddies reading this right now. Show them a new revelation of Your love and power. Amen.

Aqueduct

Les,
Can you tell me the year of this picture wich you posted recently of the Aqueduct. I am no doubt wrong in my first estimate of 1856 as notice the Electric wire poles and buildings in the background. Someone suggested that the year is probably turn of the century (1900?) I do know that the first construction ended in 1856 . The low water level threw me off but notice the grass has grown on the banks. The aqueduct was widened in 1870, 1905, 1907 and 1913.

Subject: FW: ITS CHRISTMAS DAY - ALL IS SECURE

ITS CHRISTMAS DAY ALL IS SECURE

IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
HE LIVED ALL ALONE
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE
AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE
NO TINSEL NO PRESENTS NOT EVEN A TREE
NO STOCKING BY THE MANTLE JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES AWARDS OF ALL KINDS
A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT IT WAS DARK AND DREARY
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING SILENT ALONE
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER
NOT HOW I PICTURED A LONE BRITISH SOLDIER
WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO THE FLOOR FOR A BED

I REALISED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT
SOON ROUND THE WORLD THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY

THEY ALL ENJOY FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY ALONE
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME

THE VERY THOUGH BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE
'SANTA DON'T CRY THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM I DON'T ASK FOR MORE
MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY. MY CORPS'

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT I CONTINUED TO WEEP

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SAT AND SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHTS CHILL
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD DARK NIGHT
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOUR SO WILLING TO FIGHT

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE
WHISPERED 'CARRY ON SANTA ITS CHRISTMAS DAY ALL IS SECURE'
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT'

THIS POEM WAS WRITTEN BY A PEACE KEEPING SOLDIER STATIONED OVERSEAS
THE FOLLOWING IS HIS REQUEST I THINK IT IS REASONABLE.

PLEASE WOULD YOU DO ME THE KIND FAVOUR OF SENDING THIS TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN

CHRISTMAS WILL BE COMING SOON AND SOME CREDIT IS DUE TO OUR BRITISH SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN FOR OUR BEING ABLE TO CELEBRATE THESE FESTIVITIES.
LETS TRY IN THIS SMALL WAY TO PAY A TINY BIT BACK OF WHAT WE OWE!

Do you like books about Montreal

A fellow from the Point has just been published you can read about his book from the point site link

I always enjoyed books like Mordecai Richler wrote because you knew the areas he wrote about.

Favorite Holiday Movies

Hey there, just saw " It's a Wonderful Life" for the hundreth time. Still love it. Also I remember a Chrismas Carol was on xmas eve every year when I was a kid, and I always fell asleep before the end. I was about 25 before I saw the entire movie. There's 2 that I've seen, one with Alistar Sims and the other one I can't remember who played Scrooge. Yes and also the Bill Murray one, was different but loved it too. Can't forget a Christmas Story that they play for 24hrs xmas day down here. The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant and David Nivin, can't remember the womens name. Oh well, remember," No Man is a failure, who has friends." Quoted from Clarence

Verdun Lite Up

Hi All
It's that time of the year when I used to love walking around the streets of Verdun to see all the xmas lights.....hearing the hard crunch of the snow underfoot ...sometimes slush..... but anyways it was always a wonderful time of year. Used to go caroling with Lynn Yetman and donate the money to Father Dan(most of the time)

Bob Davies (Singer/Songwriter)

On the front page of the Sport's section of today's Gazette:

Mr. Hockey broke lots of records - and inspired one

Verdun singer-songwriter had '60s hit with Gordie Howe (Is the Greatest of Them All)

DAVE STUBBS, The Gazette

Published: 7 hours ago

Whether Detroit Red Wings Hall of Famer Gordie Howe was the greatest of them all, regardless of the record book, might forever be debated by hockey fans.

But in the spring of 1963, when Howe was celebrated in a hit song by Verdun's Bob Davies, there was no doubt.

Thankyou Dave P for alerting me to the story.

Pat Daly, VCH 1962

Hi all,
Just heard about this site and it looks like fun. I graduated VCH in 1962 and hung out at Dawson's during high school when Gordie Martineau was our dance DJ. Grew up on Manning Avenue with Joyce McCallum, Margaret Ann Moore and Vivian Mallin - still friends since we were 6. I've lived in B.C. for 35 years, married with 1 son and 4 step children. My husband and I are both retired.

I remember a lot of the things people have mentioned in their postings but haven't noticed any mention of Frankie's. When we were in grades 8 to 10 we used to stop there (Bannantyne and Woodland) on the way home from St. Willi's for fries with gravy and a coke. No calorie counting in those days! VCH opened for our last year of high school but before that it was that long walk from Willibrord home to Manning, lugging 15 pounds of books in our arms. We'd save our bus money to spend at Frankie's. Last time I was by there it was changed to a hardware store (I think). Doesn't matter though, I still remember it as Frankie's.

Norman Dawe Memorial hockey (outdoors)

Remember playing hockey for the Normy Dawe??

Playing at brown park or melrose or way down at willibroad.. The snow was piled up so high beside the boards that our parents were standing at board height looking down on us!!! At the end of the season as the snow melted you would find a dozen pucks a day in the melting snow...

gotta luv it..

jd

Wellingstreet stags

Remember seeing some poor sap strapped to a cross in the back of a pickup truck being paraded down Wellington street on a friday night before he gets hitched the next day... Poor sucker was blastered and you could throw eggs and molasses at him.. gone are the good ole days.

gotta luv it

jd

hopping busses

how many rememebr those cold snowy winters and waiting for a bus to come so you could hop on the back and take a free ride down verdun or bannantyne. If there was enough snow or ice on the road you could hold on to the bumber of the bus and slide all the way down wellington street!!

gotta luv ut

jd

Curries...

i am on a roll!!..

remember curries and proudfoot's at the corner of manning and bannantyne??? I remember all the dad's who took the bus to work and got off at moffat and walked by curries, went inside to the back and had a quick quart before heading home!!

gotta luv it

jd

"Guy on the bike"

how about another thing i only seen in Verdun...

Infamous "guy on the bike".. The guy who used to deliver beer on the bike with the basket in the front and the kick stand that flopped down when he got off it. I remember seeing those guys delivering from Curries on the corner of manning and bannantyne. They used to pile 6-7 cases in that thing and could hardled see over the top... Cold beer delivered right to your house...

gotta love it..

Sad News

Dear V. C.

Sadly, Jimmy Brown of 3rd Ave. passed away on Nov. 28 -07

I have no further news of arrangements yet, will keep you up-dated.

June Broniszewski 3rd Ave.

Abe connecting 1st time

Allan Brown here from 3rd ave. A friend mentioned this site and I visited a couple of times, saw several names from the past. I thought it would be nice to re-connect. Some might remember my younger brothers Jimmy, David, Peter & Paul. I'm retired from education, and shuttling between the Nunavik area of Quebec and Eastern townships. Dave is in Canmore Alta. Peter and Paul are in Verdun. Sadly, Jim succumbed to brain cancer this past Nov 28th.

I ran into Phil Sheen who mentioned that Paul Burton was asking for news on my whereabouts. Saw a post from June B who had some contacts with Jimmy. Didn't recognize any of the other nicknames who posted replies.

Will try to visit Verdun Connections regularly and hopefully connect with friends from past.

looking for Margo Blome

My great friend from VHS 1971-last I heard she was working at the Douglas and bought a house in Crawford...has anyone been in contact with Margo Blome?

Eastern Townships

way back in the dinosaur era of the early 70's many Verdunites had camping spots or visited their parents cottages around Knowlton,Brome Lake,Bondville...sometimes I'd hitch hike with one or two friends and we'd end up there....The Thirsty Boot and Lakeview (snakeview)Plaza...GREAT party spots and many great times spent there-seems like a lot of the Verduners remember the Laurentions-what about the Townships?
