There was a black spaniel named Mickey who belonged to the Lawton's
on 2nd Avenue. He would follow us boys if we were headed to the
river. One winter we decided to check out the ice behind the police
station by walking out as far as we could. The dog ran way ahead of
us and slid into an opening in the ice. When he surfaced he was in
wide eyed panic. The poor thing frantically tried to raise himself up
out of the freezing water, but his paws wouldn't dig into the ice. I
walked out to him and because of the ice was thinner near the break,
I was forced to slide on my belly to distribute my weight over a
larger area. I manage to grab his collar and he fled for the river
bank. This left me spread eagle on the cracking and slowly sinking
surface. I manage to make a wet belly u-turn and very gingerly slid
back to shore. By the time I got home my clothes and gonads were
frozen, and I was greeted with a major ass chewing from the Lawtons
and my mother. No Victorian Cross for me. Great Verdun memories indeed.

I Can Remember walking out on that ice,and hearing the inevitable cracking of the ice,........Guess that's why we were not to play near the river,.of course that warning, just acts as a beconning welcome to the river signal,........if you fell in the river, especially during the warmer months,.you had to allow sufficient 'drying time' before going home,...unfortunately the stink of the river didn't disappear as easily............hahahahaha I could not imagine growing up as a parent in Verdun, with all the crazy stuff we did,...swim where you weren't supposed to,.climb things you weren't supposed to,....travel all over the Isalnd by ourselves,...(eg:Belmont Park),or long bus rides to see when the driver would kick you off.............hahahahah  not to mention Bumper Riding on everything from Oil Trucks to Bus's & Cars,........ Guess were Lucky to be here,......but the adventures were fantastic ...........oh yea ,a few rides in some of the police cars at times........hahahaha but it was always worse when you got home, the oldman was a better deterrent than the law,.cause gettin your rear kicked always made a longer lasting impression(not soon forgotten)............hahahahahah              Congrats on saving the dog Bill,....and always Remember the old adage          "No Good Deed, goes Unpunished"                   hahahahahah                        "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
