Dry Heat

I live in Saskatchewan, and we often get what Alberta sends our way in terms of weather.  Regarding the high temperatures that Sabby is experiencing, don't forget that it usually is a "dry heat" out on the prairies.  Eastern Canadian heat is usually accompanied by mugginess.  I remember when I visited Verdun in July about 5 years ago - I got off the plane and found it exceedingly stuffy and humid.  Even though I had grown up with those kinds of summers, living on the prairies spoiled me with the dry heat - much more easy to take.

Hi BrownBlvd.   Here in Nova Scotia it can get humid depending on where you live. I've noticed during the past 34 years of living here the weather seems to be changing. It is getting hotter during July but once August arrives it cools down especially at night. People living along the coast enjoy the coastal breezes but then they also get a lot of fog. The humidity is nothing like it is in Montral and southern Ontario, thank goodness, even when it gets up close to 30C it still cools down at night and you can still get a good nights sleep.........Dianne

In Quebec it is raining. It has rained for a week. It rains every day. It rains every morning of every day. It rains every afternoon of every day. It rains every evening of every day. It has rained every morning of every day for two weeks. It has rained every afternoon of every day for two weeks. It has rained every evening of every day for two weeks. Now they say it will rain every morning of every day for another week. They say it will rain every afternoon of every day for another week. They say it will rain every evening of every day for another week. Then they tell us how the sun is shining everywhere else in Canada. Damn the Parti Quebecois, they have ruined this Province.  Ed

I'm in Saskatchewan, in the "Parklands". Although we do/did experience the "dry heat" of the prairies (especially in the drought) the humidity is often the same or higher than in Ontario and Quebec. There is no shortage of water this year. The heat and humidity is not as suffocating as in Verdun/Montreal though. I wonder if it has something to do with the amount of cement and structures? There are very few buildings here that are more than 2 stories high and most are bungalows. Nothing to hold in the heat and smog.

Love that "dry heat".  I didn't appreciate it until I worked and lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico some years ago.  100F days were endurable.  Folks who didn't know the North East would say..."you're from Toronto?  You must be dying with teh heat here".  And I'd tell them if they came back with me they wouldn't believe the feeling as they stepped out of the airport in July....killer humidity.  Every summer I miss the South West.    BobB

Maggie. Absolutly. The heat beats down on the concrete, bricks, and asphalt, and they absorbe the heat. Even when the weather cools down at night, it still remains hot mainly because of that heat retention. It is the same in all the cities in the Northeast. That is why people go out of town during the summer to their summer cottages. They get to swim and cool off during the day, and at night there is very few concrete structures to retain the heat. If you have ever seen "The Seven Year Itch" movie with Tom Ewell and Marilyn Monroe, you will notice at the beginning of the movie that all the wives and kids are going away for the summer, to get out of the city. When most of us were growing up, the wife usually was a stay at home mom. They would have to stay home because a lot of them had 5 or 6 children. How they ever found time to get pregnant is beyond me. I guess that is why we were
always told; "Go outside and play." And we thought they were just being nice to us, by letting us go out and play. Winston Allison

carolyn. No rain for 4 months.....................well pretty soon you will be complaining about to much rain. What do you think????? I always appreciated the hurricans. I was going thru Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island from August to December one year, when hurricans were hitting us. Can you believe we had to stop training because of the high winds and heavy rain? I was always greatful for that, being stuck in the barracks. Winston Allison

Cookie,  re: Howard Brown. The name is familiar but I can't say I know him. However if he's in Verdun and doesn't have a computer, let's get him one. One of my projects is helping elderly get com puterized. I'll tell you more later, the arthritis has visited my right arm so I'm typing with one hand.  Ed
