Cheyne Cartage

Someone mentioned Cheyne Cartage recently that was on Hickson. I found in the Lovell's directory, a Milton Cheyne, Chauffeur for the Cheyne's Cartage Co., who lived at 1097 Egan. It was mentioned that Cheyne Cartage was on Hickson but it is not listed. Is there any connection with George Brown Cartage who was at 1100 Hickson. George Brown was a councillor for the City of Verdun. I got this information at the SHGV yesterday.

The Cheyne (Keith) that I went to school with lived on Egan (1097 sounds bout rite), and his ole man owned the company, that was prolly Milton.  Don't think any relationship tween them and the Browns.   dc

George Brown (Cartage) was an alderman in Crawford Park. When he died, he was replaced by Bryce Mackasey. Cheyne bought out his business at the same address. Small trucking businesses were a sure thing in the 50's, when Montreal was a bustling industrial town (Pre P.Q.) George O'Reilly also had one. The largest and most successful in Verdun was Verdun Trucking. In the late 30's, Thomas O'Connor, using a child's coaster started delivering coal bought from his Brother-In-Law's coal yard on Argyle. He saved enough to buy his first truck a 1932 Ford. Eventually, he turned to cartage and ended up with close to 1000 trucks, moving from Woodland Avenue to Boivin in LaSalle. His sons Jimmy, John and Donald all drove for him. Most of the coal and ice deliveries back then were little fellows but strong. They had to  get through those narrow shed stairways with a sack of coal or a 50 lb. block of ice.    Ed

Ed, I had a hunch that there must have been a connection between George Brown Cartage and Cheyne Cartage and you now have confirmed what I had suspected. We have a picture of dozens of George Brown Cartage trucks lined up but with no details. I can now add your information to our archives. I will make a copy of this picture and post it on my return. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Guy

Ed, Here is the photo of  George Brown Cartage, 1100 Hickson wich I estimate dates back to the early 30s and you mentioned that  company was bought out by Cheyne Cartage.I worked for Pilon Company at 1136 Hickson, (owner Albani Pilon) delivering ice blocks in lanes in the early 40s, going up those rear sheds and up to the 3rd floor. The son who stayed on his horse drawn carriage and got young boys like us to do his dirty work, promised to pay us .50 per day but never paid us. I told my father who went over to see the old man Pilon and told him he better cough up, which he finally did. I will never forget those crooks. Guy
