hi Multi,   Thanks for the pictures.  They are so good that I copied a few as reference material for a painting.  I hope you don't mind.  I found a picture of me when I was 1 1/2 sitting by the beach there where we went swimming many years ago.  You have sooo many interesting pictures that I hope you keep posting them. Popdog, no I have not tried Billy k's. I went there one evening a couple of months ago, and they were closing early because business was slow that evening!!! Last night we ate at Panda's chinese food restaurant on second ave, I think, it was the 2nd time we ate there.....quite good.    I paid 107.9 for gas there, a little better than 115.4 in Longueuil today.     m.p.u.

MPU   I love your photos of the market and playground.  You have a good eye for composition.  I especially love the way you captured the piled peppers and the baskets.  The colours are so vivid!  And the empty swings say a lot.  Thanks for the tour.   Dolly

I will regret being up this late......my radio comes on at 4:30am ....but I am having a great time here.......I almost forgot the bologny, kraft dinner, corn, and the ''famous'' ''Verdun Cinnections'' plate.......also, the unending butter vs margarine debate....... ..........do I have spare time on my hands or what ?????                                                                                                                          m.p.u.

MPU   Spare time......what's that?  Anyhow we're just glad that you stayed up late to indulge us.  My favourite pic.....the one with the single swing....the kind where you can't hold a beer or ice cream on..cause you need both hands, lol.   Thanks.   Cheers.

sabby MSN said...

Yes, MPU, you are having much too much fun and are keeping me up too.  I will regret it too cause I get up an hour after  you.  Love the Andy Wharhol composition of Kraft Dinners.  Used to live on those boxes when I first left home.  Only 25 cents then.  It's what now? --- $1. something.   Okay, I'm really going to bed and so should you.  Glad I'm off Friday!  Good night!   Dolly

Thank You Steve.............my pleasure. Maybe we can get together for a drink at some place. It would be nice to meet another member of this group. So far, I have only met Guy. I am sure I could find a few interesting spots to photograph in Ottawa.                                                                       m.p.u.

Hi Ralph, Love the pics, thanks so much. Any chance that you can get a few shots of Cornwall? My last time in Cornwall was 1989. I'm certain that it has changed a lot since then.

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Hi Fresco, check the post #19 in this discussuion...there are some pics I took Tuesday evening in Cornwall. I will check for other Cornwall pics and post them soon. My wifw will probably not be back in Cornwall for quite some time as she will be on other duties, but I will probably return in my travels.....................m.p.u.

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Fresco, here are some shots I took in Cornwall last year......... .....last year gas was up to 1.26.5 per litre, while in MTL it was about 1.35 so today price here of 119.4 is not the highest that we have experienced. I find Cornwall to be a very pretty, and very clean city. I enjoy very much my visits there. The following two pics are one that I took of an engine which is on display at the tourist centre...it was taken at night so I apologize for it being so dark, and the same engine when it was still in use.....I don't remember which member posted this pic, it was not originally taken by me........  ....anyway, thanks for your positive feedback, and more photos will come, that is a promise.....m.p.u.

fresco750 MSN said...

Thanks Ralph. Great shots of Cornwall. Is CJSS Radio still on the air in Cornwall? Can you still see any of the streetcar tracks in the Cornwall streets? The Cornwall streetcar ran everywhere & those little electric engines pulled freight cars along the trolley track routes long after the streetcars had stopped running. Most of the streetcars were replaced by trolley busses which have now been replaced by diesel busses.

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Fresco, no I have not seen any old tracks, and I have explored Cornwall quite extensively. The bussess are definitely the standard, ho-hum diesels that you see everywhere. I have not thought of clicking any of them. I will next time I am there. As far as the radio, I never change the station when I leave Montreal because both stations that I listen to have perfection reception even there. These would be CHOM 97.7 or CFQR 92.5                               mpu

Hey MPU, Thanks for the pictures of the Lasalle Rapids and Verdun, sure does bring back memories of the boating fun we had on the river in the 40's. Late April and the old row boat we owned was launched and we rowed over to Nun's Island for the weekend!!! Like a weekend in the wilds for us kids in those days. Victah

les__f MSN said...

..and Remember 'Rock Island' ,........one of our members Mike or Gerry Jones (I think it was) posted some pics in the photo album of them as kids over on the island,....That was a neat spot too,....as you could swim on the one side of the Island as the current was swept around and gave you just enough room to fool around,.....but don't try that on upriver side,......that River sure moved along at a fair clip,a good trivk was to offer to split the rowing ,your friend would row over to Rock Island ,.and you would row back,....well the rowing is a little easier coming back on the angle back to the Verdun side                                                                                 have fun& remember Verdun

I will be heading to Hawkesbury later, but it is raining too much to take any pictures. I still 'owe' some pics of the Grenville area that I promised to Fresco or someone else last year. Take Care, Ralph.

Ralph, I'm in Montreal West Station...at least I wish I was. I can remember taking the train from Montreal West Station to Windsor Station for ten cents in the nineteen fifties. If the Boston & Maine, the New York Central or Delaware & Hudson train let you ride they would not collect the CPR ticket. Fun in the fifties was to take the streetcar to Montreal West, walk down to Elmhurst Dairy for an ice cream cone & then take a ten cent ride on the CPR train.

You would laugh, but here in Comox they're having a protest march.  Against what you may ask......ready for it........against the city allowing 4-storey apartment buildings.  I think they just recently allowed 3-storey buildings in Courtenay, and not to be outdone Comox wants a 4-storey building.  This is prime location, right on the ocean, and they can charge many dineros, so bigger is better by their thinking.  Both of these towns are about 5 minutes apart and are constantly trying to out-do each other.   So I think they would have a bird (probably a seagull) if they could see what sort of buildings make up Montreal.   Didn't Montreal have a STOL airport close to downtown?  Is it still there/used?   Thanks MPU.

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Linda, In Montreal I don't think any developer would even consider a four storey building, probably use the excuse a ''waste of land'' considering how many floors could be added.....anyway regarding Comox, I don't know if I ever mentioned it but I have been to BC only once, in January 1986 to visit my sister & her husband in Comox. He was stationed there in the army. I remember it as being very nice, we went to an excellent Chinese Food Restaurant, and other things I am sure but this was twenty years ago, so my mind is blank. While we were there we had a light dusting of snow, just to make us feel at home I guess. m.p.u.

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Linda, I forgot to respond to your inquiry about the STOL airport. No, this was replaced quite a few years ago by a VIA train garage, and now there are several other businesses along the Bonaventure expressway. This could be an idea for more pics.

MPU   Unfortunately my other half doesn't really love chocolate, doesn't even LIKE chocolate, otherwise you can probably guess what I would have as my screen saver....yup....the big, beautiful cherry blossom, why even the box is beautiful!   I gandered through the site you posted (thanks), but for my liking I guess the lofts look too sterile.  I just can't imagine my poochie flinging her toys all over the place; or having 'dog blankets' on the furniture.  They're not to keep the sofa in good repair, rather she loves to make them up to her liking, and snuggle up for snoozies, lol.   Instead of lol (laughing out loud), I find myself sq (smiling quietly) so I don't disturb the other person who lives here (my other half) from watching his movie.   I wonder what happened with the STOL's...weren't they working out?  At the time I thought they'd be a real boon to the business commuters, what with arriving almost right downtown.  Does anyone know how long they lasted?   Cheers.

Sharron, I go through Verdun at least once a week, just for old times sake now. My Dad lived there until his passing away in February. I have taken many pics and will post more of the places you mentioned...La Belle Province on Wellington and Woodland Restaurant are ''regular'' stops. So are Tim Hortons on Church or Dunkin Donuts on Wellington.                     m.p.u.

Interesting pics MPU ,.I walked up that very block an awful lot of times,......and one of my friends growing up lived in the middle of thr block(on the east side of Gordon),.......one of the pics you posted in the laneway looks like it's fairly close to the old garage ,that we managed to take the window out on a few occasions while playing baseball in the backyard: Also closer to Wellington there was a large chestnut tree,...where we would get those green throny shells,.and use them as our 'surprise' handshake tricks,......this was when we didn't have the money to buy the proper silver windup handshake zapper, from the old Trick &  Johe Shop on Wellington   ( Remember where the 'stink bombs ' were sold,..and the fake everything stuff,........dog turds,....puke,....etc etc,.....) Hi Ralph, There is a magazine called Soda Pop Dreams published by Blair Matthews from Huntsville, Ontario. The Spring 2006 issue has a great story about The Cornwall Bottling Works which was in business from 1890 until 1968. Their best selling beverage was a soda called Stubby which came in 5 delicious flavors. A ZIP in every SIP. In 1927 Coca-Cola approached The Cornwall Bottling Works to bottle Coke. Cornwall Bottling didn't think Coca-Cola would sell. Not too long after Coca-Cola's offer Pepsi-Cola tried to get Cornwall Bottling as a franchiser and they were also turned down. Cornwall Bottling folded in 1968 but it seems that Stubby bottles and Stubby metal advertising signs are very popular items at yard sales in Cornwall. The article also says that Stubby had other Canadian franchises. The most Eastern was in Montreal & the most Western was Pintcon, British Columbia. Despite what the article says I never remember seeing Stubby Soad in Montreal. With summer coming up I hope on your next Cornwall "Walk With Me" you'll spot a yard sale with a Stubby bottle or sign for sale

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Walter, I will definitely check this out, and will mention also to a friend who lives in this area.  There are small bottles of soft drinks available in Deux Montagnes, I think the name is Stubby, will check that today. The website for this magazine has a story about Pop Shoppe, which were very popular in Montreal in the mid 70s but did not last long. When I was in Merrickville Ontario a couple of weeks ago I saw a store that had a Pop Shoppe sign in the window, but I did not check it out.                      Ralph.

Hi Dianne, yesterday was a cold rainy day in Deux-Montagnes. Today is sunny, not too hot, perfect for cutting grass....yuk, but someone has to do it. I wish I could make a trip in the near future to Nova Scotia, but not this year. I used to go there a lot as a kid as my Mom's sister lived in Sydney. The last time I was there was 1975, and did the full tour for my new girlfriend (now my wife) of Cabot Trail, Louisburg, Sydney, Baddeck, etc, etc, camped a few nights in Kejimkujik Park as my wife's brother was working there for the summer. I love the Maritimes, although I have never been to PEI, but I am sure it would be very nice.     Ralph.

I just realized where everybody must be http://www.festivalmondialbiere.qc.ca/ at the World Beer Festival in Windsor Station. This makes sense as a location, since during the 25+ years I worked for CPR in Windsor Station, I would say that I saw a bigger concentration of alcoholics than I have ever seen anywhere else. There must be a lot of ghosts / spirits (pun intended) attending this event.                                                                                                             Ralph.

ok, whoever the big one is!!! as for charles alepin,s home in verdun on lasalle, there is no pool, my grand father worked for him, maintained the home,  in the fifties after retiring from CNR. but, after those years, who knows what went in to the design of this historical home. thanks for all the photos and memorabilia. i am trying to put some photos taken recently in bahamas as queen mary 2 docked off shore there for a day, in front of old holiday inn, now lucayan resort.  copy paste does not work.  any ideas from the pros.?? nice weekend everyone, carolyn bennett

Carolyn, I am not a pro, and have never been able to copy and paste a photo into Verdun Connections. I have an album with over 700 pictures called Ralphie's Pics,  I always have to upload my photos from my hard drive, , and then import them into the message that I am writing.   I have only been to the Bahamas once, to the Grand Bahama Hotel, west of Freeport on our Honeymoon in May 1976, and went to Freeport only once to shop and go to the casino. I remember it as having been a very beautiful place. I would love to visit again, maybe this time Nassau.......Ralph aka M.P.U.
