Chocolat Lowney's Chocolate

Here is an article in the newspaper La Presse concerning the conversion of the old Lowney's chocolate factory in Griffintown into lofts where they used to make the famous Cherry Blossom chocolate bar. Are there any members who remember this factory and who perhaps even worked there.

Bonjour Guy,    I have seen a large Lowney sign on the building on the southeast corner of Peel & Notre Dame. This I am sure used to be the Dow brewery building a number of years ago. I don't know if Lowney used it before or after Dow used it. I seem to remember O'Keefe buying out Dow in the 70's and possibly shutting them down. But now the O'Keefe building on the southwest corner has been a school for a number of years. I will take some photos of all of these buildings next time I am in that area.                                                                   m.p.u.

Pan American Exposition 1901 Buffalo Lowney's Chocolate Building Front of the building (doors at right above) faced its competitor, the Baker's Chocolate Building.
The Horticulture Building was to the far right across the canal.
To its rear, visible at left, is one of the 36 Exposition restaurants.

Three stories tall, the first floor was devoted to the sale of Lowney's chocolate, cocoa, and chocolate bon bons.
The second floor was an office, exhibits, and lady's waiting room.
The third floor was a roof garden that guide books said was beautiful and "well worth the visit for the fine view obtainable." Steve

Steve, I have noticed some 'bad air' recently in this group. In Remembering Verdun, the messages about the hospital train seemed to have a negative feeling. Last week there were problems with Holiday Recipes which resulted in Betty leaving our group.   I want to repeat again, that I read EVERY posting and look at every picture regardless whether it is something that really interests me. My point of view is, if someone posts something, then it must have interested them, so I will take a look. The same goes in reverse. I post things that interest me, and also hope to intrigue the interest of other members also.   I have been a member of Verdun Connections almost since its creation, and feel as if I almost know some of the members, and hope the end of the group  is not in the cards. If I have bored anyone with this message I apologize. If anyone agrees, thanks.                                                            Ralph, aka M.P.U.

Steve, in re-reading my previous message, I was maybe not clear on one point...I am not critical of you or your postings, not the slightest. Please keep the stories, the links, and the pics coming.  Thanks, Ralph.
