And if you are Ukranian or Eastern Orthodox, Jan 6 is Christmas Eve and Jan 7 is Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Thanks Sandy, We had a great Christmas & New Year's Eve. You are right, it's still a big thrill having lived in Florida for only 1 year, 3 & a half months watching snowstorms on TV while sitting in the warm weather. Our cable provider has WGN Chicago TV on the system. WGN shows some nasty weather. Hope all's well up north-Walter

Thank you Sandy. It's actually my wife who is Ukranian. Uke Christmas is pretty quiet for us these days, but when I was younger and Joanne's folks were alive (and my appetite was a lot bigger) I used to really enjoy two Christmas celbrations.

We still celebrate with some friends...mainly a meal and get together to keep the tradition alive.

Hi Les

Yeah, I can remember having an endless appetite. The onlyconsolation is that now my son has an endless appetite. So, we pass it on..... the care package to take home .... the help finishing what I can't seem to get through.....the "doggy bag" from the restaurant. The torch has been passed :).

But....it's a good life.

My mom used to say "Oh I can't eat that, it doesn't agree with me anymore."  And I used to reply that it was all in her head.  Well I now find myself starting to say the things as her.   "Mirror, mirror, on the wall.....I am my mother, after all."   Cheers.

Sorry, I know how corny this is, but I am on a ''see food diet''. However since I turned 50 my Doctor has been telling me to look into other options while I still can. mpu

Hi Linda,

Your "mirror mirror"...etc., reminded me of an experience I had not too long ago. I walked by a mirror and from the corner of my eye, I thought I saw my mother looking at me! I nearly jumped out of my Skin! What a weird feeling that was!...Dianne

With a big Ukranian community in Edmonton, the lights stay on for another 2 weeks apparently.  This Ukranian girl at work shared her traditions with me and she was cooking every night--- cabbage rolls, peroghys, katia (wheat and honey), --- she was preparing for Christmas Eve on Friday (20 people).  I asked her if everyone received gifts again and she said no.  The Ukranian Christmas is about food and more food and having everyone get together and going to church, but no gifts.    The poor thing was exhausted coming in to work every day, but I know down deep she enjoyed it because unlike some of us (moi) she loves to cook.  And yeah, I agree, can't eat what I used to.

A Verdun problem. What will we do with the old Christmas trees? There are no snowbanks.              Ed

Yes no snow banks to stick the tree in,........ When I lived there ,the trees were always in the laneway,.....and a few dried out real fire hazards could be found months later, usually by someone who just didn't take it out of their yard,.........hahahaha Imagine a dried out pine tree, beside a shed that housed fuel oil ,.coal,.and was made of soemreally dried outwood,....Amazing the fires weren't more often,...........although they were common,.in Verdun & Montreal for that matter,.........I'm glad to see they've pretty-much done away with the old Sheds.......it sure does allow alot more light to enter the houses / kitchens of those old Flats........and has also allowed the use of a 'backyard of sorts now,......                  How can we Remember Verdun without thinking of those old lanes too ??......................they must be a lot cleaner now too, with garbage pickup out front now:

Yeah, They done away with sheds but did they have to take the snow banks too. ?Ed
