Radio Programs

Some of the radio programs that I used to enjoy, around the 1950 era, were:
- The Lone Ranger
- Amos and Andy

But I'm trying to remember what station played the following:

Every morning, around the same time, an announcer used to play a marching band type of music, and announced "It's time to march around the breakfast table."  I remember marching around the table with my sister and brother.

Another favorite was listening to the "Teddy Bear's Picnic".  The song went something like "If you go out in the woods today....." but I don't remember what station it was on.

Does anyone else remember these, or did you have a favorite radio program?

Les_F,   Glad to hear your brother has good taste!!!   My dad, who used to work nights, was there for breakkie with us, and he was a real old jokster.  He used to get us lined up, single file, pump up the volume on the radio and marched right along with us.  What a wonderful memory.  I often wonder how many Dads do that these days.   I was talking to my sis back in Beaconsfield a couple of days ago, and lucky for her she went back to our childhood home and the fellow who lives there invited her in.  I guess that the past decades have brought changes to the homestead, and as she described the changes I asked her what emotions she felt.  My dad had built the house so we knew the home inside/out.  She didn't have any great emotions, either good or bad, and said "you know time marches on".  So I guess its different strokes for different folks.  Myself, I felt a bit sad but glad I wasn't the one to go in and see the changes.  Lucky for me I get to remember it the way it was.   Thanks for the good work both you and Maggie McK are doing on this site.  It's gotta be a hard call trying to keep all us "kids" in line.

Ok I think I've found the guy . this guy's name is Don McNeil,...(Google it and you'll find sveral things ),...but there is even an MP3,..of one of the shows,.but I couldn't get it to play properly,... (or at all ,the truth be known.........hahahaha) ,....but I also   have this web address,..... the show was sponsored by Cream of Wheat,        http://www.winnetkahistory.org/gazette/people/don_mcneil.htm            Your right it's never the same ,.and I guess that's why they say 'You can never Go home Again'         that's what makes doing this stuff somewhat fun,to Remember Verdun,............and just like a real family,..some of the kids went to school on the really short bus..........hahahahahah   the same ones that had to touch the stove several times, before they believe us...............hahahahahah            HF&RV

Here's reference to the "Happy Gang" radio show, and the challenge to listeners.  My Dad (and Mom) were in the Air Force and perhaps this is how he knew about this.

Linda. The Teddy Bear Song was also the theme song for a kids program emceed by Big John and Sparky from Cincinatti, Ohio. It was on a Canadian station when I was a kid around 1950. I still sing it to my granddauther (age 8). I just love it. AND my granddaughter tolerates it. I have to tickle her back at the same time though. Winston Allison

Hi Linda, The marching around the breakfast table was Don McNeil's Breakfast Club show out of Chicago. It was on the ABC Radio Network and carried in Montreal by 600 CFCF. The show went off the air in 1968. Anita Bryant was the singer on the program. The Teddy Bear's picnic rings a bell. I'm putting the thinking cap on & if I think of it I'll get back-Walter

regtheretiree1 MSN said...

Hi Clenken,   You are correct . The program was called The Breakfast Club with Don MacNeill and it originated from Chicago. I believe it was on CJAD because that is the only station my mom listened to. I believe that once this program went off or replaced by Canadian content the Morning Man was Bill Roberts on CJAD. His son Leslie Roberts is Global's anchor man in Toronto. Bill died earlier this year.   That was a great morning program and I remember marching around the breakfast table also.   Great topic.   Reggie Paine   PS I hope kungfu wasn't singing that Teddy Bear song to anyone.

Hi Reggie, CFCF had Don McNeil's Breakfast Club. CFCF had the ABC Radio Network. CJAD had the CBS Radio Network. CJAD had CBS shows like Robert Q Lewis every night at 9pm during the nineteen fifties. Robert Q Lewis was a riot. Very funny. CJAD also had Amos N Andy, Johnny Dollar, Gangbusters, Grand Central Station & The FBI In Peace & War. Great stuff-Walter

Hi Reggie,

I had completely forgotten about Bill Roberts on CJAD. He was the person
who called my mother when she won a 1961 Cadillac in Simpsons car contest, by
submitting the sales receipt for a pair of boots she bought for me! It got
me a new bike out of the deal!

I believe it was the George Balcean morning show, that had us marching
around the breakfast table. It was on cfcf radio that Sparkie & Big John
came on every Saturday morning. Sparkie wanted to one day be a real boy. Big
John always encouraged us to go to our choice of C hurch on Sunday, as he &
Sparkie would go to their's....On cjad, they used to put a poem in the pot
for Pinkertons, the flower shop on Sherbrooke st W. in Westmount just
bordering N.D.G......What fond memories of our childhood........Thank's for
allowing me to remember......

Columbia Records EL-115, Columbia Marcas Rec. Printed in Canada, Paul Reid's
"A Letter To My Love". I really hope that this will help you locate it. If
you do & they have it in a CD, please post it here & I will be Certain to
pick it up. My particular Record of it is totally scratched, or at least
worn out. Those of you who live in Montreal, might want to call Radio
Station to find out whether they ever play any of Paul's Programme's, & if
they do would we be able to get copies from them......I think that his
family lives here in Hamilton somewhere, & he used to be on a Radio Station
here in Beautiful Downtown Hamilton.......Called "Hometown Radio 900
CHML.....You know, maybe I'll call them myself & get back to you on
this.....Love this site......

Hi Norman, I think Paul Reid was raised in Peterborough, Ontario. Did Dave Patrick ever tell you about the time he spent in Cuba helping a Canadian friend who was contracted by Cuba to start a turkey farm? Dave had some very funny stories. Walter

synerrgize MSN said...

Hey Walter, Yes you are quite correct, Paul Reid did come from Peterbourough
On. As a matter of fact for years, when I was still in Montreal pre 1975,
before moving here to Ontario, Paul's Xmas Show was aired on C.J.A.D. & he
often spoke about his siblings & his home town. He appeared to have loved
his roots, much like all of us here on this site...

Dave was accustomed to speaking for quite a few minutes in an intro, before
he would even play a song. He had some great stories, I guess the one that
influenced me most, was that he was a Foster-Care Parent, to some Children
on the other side of our World....I thought, what manner of man must he
really be......To care so much for someone he didn't even know.....That left
a lasting impression on me......Dave Patrick, like most Montrealer's are The
World's Best People.....You know I always thought, if you came from
Montreal, in those days you were definitely someone SPECIAL.

I haven't recorded off the radio in years. I used to have a twin deck cassettte player as one of the components on my stereo. I would tape music that way. But technology has changed so much, I don't know what people are doing now. It will be broadcast on the web as well. But, I don't know how to record (even if you can) from the internet onto your hard drive. It would be nice if CJAD podcast the broadcast. Then you could download it onto iTunes. Not much help, I'm afraid

What am I thinking? Bob, you're not in Montreal are you? So, radio is out, I guess. I guess it's recording off the internet or accessing a CJAD podcast. but they may not podcast Paul Reid if his son is selling CDs.

I'm in the process of subscribing to the CJAD podcast to see what they offer. I'll let you know.

Hi Again

Here's a link to CJAD's page on Paul REid. My appologies if someone already posted it.

I have written to the program director asking if the show will be podcast. I suspect the answer will be no, but maybe we'll be surprised. If the answer is yes, I think all you need is iTunes on your PC. It's free and the podcasts from CJAD are free. No need to own an iPOD.

I'll let you know when I get an answer.

Hi Betty, I'm certain that I will. In the old days I used to tell everyone
about this Radio Show, even though we Loved Rock-N-Roll, I used to take a
little time out from going to the Place Pigalle, or the Cave, or the Esquire
Show Bar, to listen to some real Canadian Culture, in terms of Paul
Reid....Does he still play BOLERO in the background?.....

Hey Multi, Paul Reid of course predates the Movie "10"....Although I'll take
nothing away from Bo Derek, she brought Bolero, into the mainstream...Some
people still tell me that when they hear this piece it reminds them of the
Move "10"...However not me, I bought the Album after hearing it in the mid
sixties on the Paul Reid Show, by Stanley Black, & I played it until it wore
out. Long before the Movie "10". As a matter of fact if you check the Movie
credits, I'll bet that some Montrealer, had a lot to do with choosing that
particular piece, for the Movie....Of course that's just my opinion...I
believe that the Movie Industry is filled with, Beautiful, Perfect
Canadians. & our influence is pervasive in Hollywood.....

Sandra (Cookie). I know you took a lot of teasing when you were younger. But on my part it was done with quite a lot of affection. Your brother was a good friend as we were growing up, and being his sister, I thought of you as a friend also. We were young and had great times on 3rd Avenue. I am so glad you found this site, and so very glad I have talked to Wayne, and been able to communicate with you here. Thanks for your good wishes. The same goes for you and your hubby. Merry Christmas, and hope you both will have a wonderful, healthy, and exciting 2006.  I may have lost my innocence a long time ago, but I have never lost my childs imagination. If you allow yourself to dream, you can imagine a horse talking or Charlotte, of "Charlottes Web" talking to a pig. Goofy? Yes!!! But fun!!!!!! That is why I love being with my grandkids. I can act like a child again, and pretend right
along with them. Are we not doing that on this site. Reliving our chlidhood, and the fond memories we have. Also remembering our childhood innocence??? We must never lose that IMAGINATION!!! Winston

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Radio really forced us to use our imagination.  Those horse hoof sounds really did sound like a horse, and the rain and thunder and lightening could really make you believe you were in the middle of a storm.  Remember, there were no visuals then, only audio.  I think tv and computers have taken some of the suspense out of tracking Santa as he descends from the North Pole (that is if kids today still track Santa).   Also, did anyone else do the Christmas Stocking tradition?  There was always the usual orange/apple, bag of 5 cent candies/chips, and perhaps a couple of hair barrettes or new ribbons for our pigtails.  But one other tradition I remember is that there was always a brand new box of crayola crayons and a brand new Christmas colouring book in our stocking.   Cheers.

For anyone who likes or listened to old time radio programs, here's a site you're sure to enjoy:   http://www.radiolovers.com   I listened to a couple of Amos and Andy shoes....quite a trip and I loved this program as a youngster.  When I was about 5 years old my grandmother bought me a little black doll, and I promptly named her Amosandie.  I had that little doll till goodness knows when and ultimately she got lost.   Have fun listening....quite a variety of programs.   Cheers.

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Mom1945-Linda. The stocking are a big thing with my wife and I. We have one for each member of our family that we fill to overflowing. That is what I remember most about Christmas when I was a kid, was the stockings. They didn't have panty hose then. It was just 2 single stocking held up by garters at the thighs.  Of course today they have those short ankle socks now. Thank heaven they didn't have them when we were growing up. We would have gotten stiffed!!!! Winston Allison

Hi Les, I was wondering if you heard Art Bell last night? His wife Ramona passed away on January 5th. This was Art's first time back on the air after his wife's death. She died from an asthma attack while they were on a camping trip in their Recreational Vehicle. Ramona was only 47 years old. Art is 60 and has asked Premiere Radio to keep him very busy to get his mind off the situation. He will be live for four hours each Saturday & Sunday. I'd love to see him go back to the weekday show. In other news we have had a lot of coverage in Florida on Canada's election today. C Span has carried 'The National' News every night at 10pm. I wish they would continue to carry it after the election. Time Warner Cable shows 'The National' every night, unfortunately our cable provider is Adelphia & they do not show any Canadian TV. Hope all's well out west, loved the MPU Deux-Montagnes snow pics. HF&RV-Walter
