Smoked Meat

Based on my experience, the best smoked meat in Montreal is Moe's Deli & Bar on St Jean Boul. corner Brunswick in Pte Claire facing Fairview shopping centre and they beat Chenoy's. I was very disapointed with Schwartz.

I know what your saying Guy.  I've tried Moe's several times and its very good.  The others in town are Ben's (deMaisonneuve X Metcalfe), Dunns, etc.  It all boils down to a matter of taste I guess. Mac

You know I bet that each place has an off day - might be depending on who is slicing up that smoked meat.   When I worked in Westmount Square there was a deli in the main level - they used to serve up a pretty good smoked meat and fries.  I used to watch that guy cutting like a hawk - he was so busy trying to get a peek down my blouse - hahaha - that I often came away with gigantic sandwiches - much better than the men got because he would just keep slicing and gawking.

Smoked Meat.  Love it.  If you are unfortunate enough to be trying to find it in Toronto (where I have been asked if I want lettuce & tomatoe on it and do I want it on a kyser bun!!!!!!!!) .... then go to Mel's Montreal Deli   440 Bloor W
Toronto, ON M5S1X5 Phone:   (416) 966-8881 I heard about it, tried it....it's the real deal.  Located on Bloor between Bathurst & Spadina.    BobB

Hi Les, That Lester's Deli on Bernard Avenue, Outremont looks great. My aunt & uncle lived on Bernard Avenue for years, just up the street from Robil Ice Cream. We'd go there a lot, great ice cream. Pistachio, maple walnut..all the great flavors. I went there once in the nineties but seem to remember my cousin telling me that Robil's Ice Cream is now closed.

Hi BobB, Is Junior's still going? On Yonge one block south of St Clair? They had great Montreal smoked meat. I also loved New York Franks on Yonge by Dundas. Fantastic Coney Island hot dogs.

Hi Guy,   When you live in London Ontario anyplace in Montreal would have great smoke meat. If you people like gambling the Montreal Casino has the best I have had in years. When we visit Montreal we always go for a smoked meat at the casino. But it cost a heck of a lot if your unlucky at the gambling.   Reggie Paine

Hi Fresco

Sorry, I don't know Junior's or New York Franks. But for a while there was a great place on Mt. Pleasant across from the Chick n Deli that did Montreal style steamed hot dogs. Then, sadly it disappeared.

At least we can now get Montreal bagels at a few places. Boy we ex Montealers / Vedunites must be pains in the asses to the rest of the folks out there. Oh well, too bad, eh?

Yeah, I agree we probably are real pains in the butt, but we know what we like and we've tried every joint that claims they have real Montreal smoked meat and they are as rare as hens teeth! Tried Montreal Deli in Mississauga a couple of weeks ago and they were delicious! Zellers, here in Nova Scotia had a special on and they were quite good...Dianne

Hi BobB, In Toronto you still have the streetcars. Verdun/Montreal removed the streetcars 46 years ago. Big mistake. Do they still have Shopsie's Hot Dogs in Toronto? I remember the commercial "Hot dog it's a shopsie!" Shopsie would always have a great setup at the Canadian National Exibition every year. I also remember Honest Ed, Crazy Honest Ed's store, Bloor & the Danforth. Honest Ed had really low prices. It's been twenty years since I've been to Toronto. Hope I get there again someday.

Hi Fresco   As far as I know , there are still Shopsie's Hot Dogs to be had here.  and Honest Ed's Store is still going strong.  It's been a few years since I've been in there, but it isn't far from Mel's Montreal Dli which I mentioned in my earlier post.  Next time I go for a Smoked Meat "fix", I may wander through Honest Ed's.  He still has all the lights and garish signs on his store...things like "come in and get lost" and other corny (but fun) stuff.  Every year at Christmas he gives out hundreds of Turkeys to people outside his store. He and his son are responsible for the revitalization of the theatre district in Toronto.  He's done a lot.    As for the Streetcars, you're right.  TO still has 'em.  One of the few remaining transit properties in North America to have streetcares as far as I know.  I guesss with gas prices going up (I don't know haow it compares to electricity) they are likely to stay around for a long time.      BobB

Bob,   Best Smoked Meat in Toronto- Centre St. Deli on Centre st in Thornhill. Daughter of owner of Snowden Deli on Decarie. Better than any I have tried since coming to TO 1987.   Also, Reubens across from the Holiday Inn on King St. Fashioned after Schwartz Montreal. Pretty good also.   Pickle Barrel, Mtl Smoked Meat etc are all low end sandwiches compared to what you get in Montreal- You wont go wrong at Centre St. amd you will think your back down on the main.   rgds keith

Y a t'il de bons restaurants que quelqu'un peut recommander dans Verdun, d챕li ou autres?   Are there any good restaurants in Verdun, deli or other that members can recommend?   Guy

les__f MSN said...

Hello Guy5479,   what type of restaurant are you looking for........an evening meal, or a quick snack.?   I am not sure about Verdun ,.......but a few years ago i was visiting Montreal and stopped in a restaurant on Joliceur & Monk ( I think it was around there ?? but it was called   'STOP'  and the food was served in very generous portions (lots) and it was very quick and fairly decent ..........the restaurant was incredibly busy.........but's more of a 'quick lunch' type restaurant ........However if your in that neighborhood...........burger from  'Dillalo's is a must ......with hot peppers .............very good.    as for Verdun  I'm not sure anymore......Have Fun & Remember Verdun         oh there is a restaurant up on the boardwalk near Woodland ( I think it is) and one of our members mentioned that it was nice,....it's apparently right on the riverside,of the boardwalk.......and then odf courae Woodland Restaurant is still there on the corner of Wellington & Woodland) it used to be good.........

Hi... I can vouch for the Stop on Monk, corner of Jolicoeur too, especially if you want a ton of food and reasonably priced, certainly not gourmet, but very good and the atmosphere is dinner style. Bon Appetit....Dianne

Je me suis soudainement rappelé qu'il y a la Rôtisserie en face de l'hôpital de Verdun. J'ai mangé là une fois et je l'ai trouvé la nourriture très bonne.   I Suddenly remembered the rotissery in front of the Verdun General Hospital. I ate there once and found the food very good.   Guy
