There was a St. Hubert BBQ on MacLeod Trail south in Calgary too around the same time but it was close to a Swiss Chalet and the St Hubert BBQ didnt survive.   There is a Montreal Smoked meat place in Calgary up by the airport - fries are not good but the smocked meat was so big I could only eat half a sandwich and I noticed that the guy was selling St. Hubert BBQ sauce in packets.

Hi Shirley, I can guess why the smoked meat sandwich in Calgary was so big. A few years back the employees at the Carnegie Delicatessen in New York City got mad at the owner. To bust his chops they made huge sandwiches one night to cut down on the profits. The customers loved the new huge sandwiches so much that they remained a part of the menu. The Stage Deli in New York and others copied the large sandwich idea. We have a deli in Florida called the Rascal House. It's a fun place and now it has the giant sandwiches. Sorry I was so long here but it was quite a mouthful. Sorry, bad pun. Remember Verdun and Happy Easter.

St Hubert still very successful here in Montreal and all Quebec, its great chicken , all the cole slaw you can eat and reasonable price, I know they also opend one in Fort Lauderdale Fla. but it did not survive , wonder why, interesting    Jimmy

Hi Jimmy, It's not all bad news. Ft Lauderdale still has a Swiss Chalet.

Hey Fresco Only in Quebec for St. Hubert down south you got your Kentuckey Duck by the Kernal

Ahh, it's great to have family in TO that can buy the sauces from St Hubert BBQ and send them out to the Wet Coast, only one place comes close out this way, a place called the "Roosters Quarters" in Vancouver and Maple Ridge (owned by former Montrealers)

There was a St Hubert in Halifax years ago, but didn't last. Swiss Chalet is a big deal here. There is a St Hubert in Moncton on Mountain Road.

You can't get a decent smoked meat here in N.S. They call them Montreal Smoked meat, but they are so small in comparison. Just returned from Mississauga, and on Dundas Street there is the Montreal Deli, and they have wonderful smoked meat......Dianne

Hi Give_Me_One, I remember when Piazza Tomasso opened Canada's first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant next to Piazza Tomasso on Decarie Blvd. It was good garbage and tasted great in those days. In addition to the Chalet Bar-B-Q on Sherbrooke I think the Laurier Bar-B-Q on Laurier is great. I used to like Chalet Lucerne on St Catherine's near Guy but the last time I was there it was not the same.

Hey Fresco
The taste changes because the old pots used
wear out . The new cooks don't know how
to get the new pots to taste the same , and
don't forget the taste buds of the new patrons
are not the same . So the store ends up closing .

Hi Give-Me-One,          You got that right. Music, food, places to visit and at lot of other things change with each generation. A friend told me that antique cars of the 30's are going bye bye as that generation passes away. My friend speculates that antique 50's cars, 50's music will die out when we leave. My kids refuse to watch a black & white movie. To each his/her own.

Hi Steve...I don't know about Arby's in Mississauga but here in Nova Scotia we have one and their roast beef sandwiches were good, haven't been there for one lately. When we lived in Montreal, we went to Ben's and Dunne's. Now, when we fly to dorval, we'll stop at Miss Dorval for smoked meat, on our way to Verdun and LaSalle, as we seldom get to go downtown, too busy visiting the relatives. But we always make time to drive around Verdun and Cote St.Paul.......Dianne

From my experience Arby's is a poor excuse for roast beef. Sorry, to those
who like it, but to me it's tasteless. I'll take just the memory of St.
Hubert BBQ or Dunn's smoked meat any day.

shirleybh2 MSN said...

Ruth - I had a beef sandwich at Arby's once here in Calgary - the beef looks like it bled to death - beef is not supposed to look aenemic.  Perhaps it is because they cut it with a razor blade or some such - the only reason I had one is that they were 4 for $5 and a few people at our office were going to have one let me tell you it was not worth more than 1.25.

Hi Shirley I don't know if Zeller's in your area and the rest of Canada, but here in Nova Scotia at the Zeller's restaurants, there is a great special in Montreal Smoke meat sandwiches. They are quite lean for those of us who have to watch our diets, and for an wxtra 1.97 you can have an extra 4 ounces of meat. My husband and I were quite impressed with them, and I'd like to say that we know a good sandwich when we get one.We have been searching for great smoked meat for years, and the Zeller's special is the best we've had outside of Montreal and last week in Mississauga. Worth a try folks!...Dianne

Hello everyone, from beautiful, snowy- Toronto. For you smoke meat lovers formerly from Montreal, you may remember the Snowden Deli on Decarie & Queen Mary.   Their daugher openned her own deli in Thornhill called the Centre St. Deli on Centre Street, just west of Bathurst. It is the absolute best in Toronto, hand sliced and thick. Take a bite, close your eyes and you would swear you are back on the Main.   There is also a deli called Ruebens across from the Holiday Inn on King Street downtown. . He first called himself "Rueben Scwartz" and modelled his deli after Schwartz in Montreal, right down to the stools, Grill and tables. I think Schwarts took legal action to get him to drop the Schwartz name, but is it also good smoke meat, similar to the Scwartz one we all love.   There are two St. Hubert BBQ's left here that I know of, one on Avenue Road south of the 401 and another on Dundas, just east of the 427.    keith

Keith - was that Miss Snowdon restaurant near St. Mary's Hospital - I am certain that my aunt used to take us there seems to me it was on the SW corner and our bus stop was just around the corner from the restaurant.  Cant remember if we were visiting my grandmother in the hospital or coming home from Belmont park when we used to stop in.

Hey  Diane; next time you fly into Dorval, you should try a smoked meat at Deli B's just close to the Valois train station in Pointe Claire right next door to the Mayfair tavern. The owner is the brother of Pete's Smoked meat in Ile Perrot. They have lot's of other deli goodies there too.

willie MSN said...

Hi Keith,   You have that right! I go to the Centre Street Deli for Smoked Meat, and it is the closest to Schwartz's that I have come to. There was a Steamie Hot Dog place in the next plaza, but it closed down A few years ago. IT was modelled after Norman's, witth a 50's Diner twist to it.   If you want wings that have character, Muddy Water Tavern in Beeton is good. I ride up there in the biking season to see what's cooking. The hotel used to be a home for "wayward women" from the history that I gathered.   Willie (now in Brampton)

fresco MSN said...

Hi Willie, The Main Deli across the street from Schwartz's is pretty good. When I was in there in 1998 they told me they had been open 24 hours per day continuously since 1948.

keithinbeeton1 MSN said...

Hi Shirley,   The snowden deli was next to the Snowden theatre bewteen Queen Mary and Macdonald on Decarie. On the same side at the corner was Pumperniks which has since closed.   Ironically the way I find out aboy the Centre St. deli was I was in the Snowden one a few years back and mentioned to the cashier that I wish I could get a smoke meat like that in Toronto, and the lady told me " My daugther openned in Toronto-you should visit her.....the rest is history. keith'

keithinbeeton1 MSN said...

Hi Willie,   I live in Beeton and am very familiar with " The Muddy" the wings are good and the place still reminds me of a biker bar but the regulars and visitors from TO are nice.. Still a good place to stop off on the veranda for a beer and watch the world go by.   I still think on e of the best wings are from a chain called Hooters, which ,don't be deceived by the name, is actually very clean and although the girls are in hot pants, they are still presentable. I see many families in this chain.. The waitresses are are buxom, but nothing  you wouldn't see on the street in the summer. You have one in Brampton on Queen just east of Kennedy. Exceptionally clean places with an open kitchens which are spotless.    I also remember the hot dog place in the next plaza, I agree, terrific hot dogs and fries. Two " Toasty" , fries and a coke....They ended up not paying the rent and were booted out. A place like that in a busier setting i.e. Yonge St. it would have been great.  There used to be a joint on Kennedy in Brampton called Paquettes who also had good steamies but they shut down too.   Other than the hot dog/sausage vendors, cant seem to get a good steamie anymore in Toronto.   keith

Pssstttttt..........bettylooca, you're telling everyone about the best kept secret about smoked meat in the last few years!!!  I find it better than Pete's and ohh so close to Schwartz"s style, but more moist.  I live a 3-wood and a good 5-iron away from there so I get my usual fix.  You're also correct about him being Pete's brother.  I spoke to him and he said they had a falling out a few years back and thats when he opened up the Deli B's. Mac

I am sorry to report that The Swiss Chalet Bar-B-Q in Ft Lauderdale, Florida has closed.

Fresco, That certainly indicates a lack of "taste" in that area! Art

Gee I would have thought that little Quebec alone would have kept it afloat. I think that rotisserie chicken is something that you have to be brought up on - we always called it BBQ chicken but I went to a company BBQ in Conneticut one year - whole bus load from Montreal - they had BBQ chicken - it was chicken that was slathered in ketchupey stuff and cooked on the grill - what a mess that was to eat and very disappointing too after Chalet Lucerne and St. Hubert and Swiss Chalet.

dzldawg1 MSN said...

Wow, went to Wal-Mart in North Vancouver and found St Hubert Bar-B-Que sauces and gravies in the can and pouches, now all we need is the restaurant and the chicken and fries

shirleybh2 MSN said...

I buy Swiss Chalet sauces in the pack make my own french fries and put a couple of chicken on the spit for 2 hours - voila BBQ chicken.

Art, You are 100% right. They just chicken out when it comes to good taste-Walter

If you buy the Swiss Chalet "dipping" sauce in the package it's very good. You can use it as BBQ gravy too.

What is beer can style - do you cook the chicken on a beer can? what kind of beer?  I have never had a beer so would have to go buy some - bet my sisters wish they could say that. My husband is not a big beer drinker and when he does it is Corona or Alexander Keith or Boddington's.

Hi Bob,

While on the different cooking techniques, have you tried "Trash Can
Turkey"? If you like smoked flavor, you have to try that. It takes about 45
minutes to cook a 22-25 pound turkey! I prefer to deep fry mine.. 20 pounds in
30 minutes!

My wedding reception was in the original StHubert BBQ on StHubert st. on May 22, 1976, yes, almost 30 years of bliss. St.Hubert chicken is still pretty good also. I am not sure about pics of St.Hub except for the partly constructed new one on Lasalle Blvd. right in front of the Auditorium, which I will have to look for. i think I might have copied other images from the web site. I  did pass by Trevi Pizza tonight and took this picture, sorry, it is dark................. ...I was in a hurry, and did not stop for a bite
