The only 'Lumber Yard' in the area being described was on Gordon Av,  about halfway up to Bannantyne from Verdun.......on your Left hand side if headed towards bannantyne.......it's yards, went from Gordon Av to the laneway perpendicular to QuinnLane...( the lane running paralell to Verdun Av,btwn Gordon & Rielle)........I played in there a lot as a kid,.......and it was a game to time crawling under the Fence(tuck entrance,on Gordon).......and running like a little Ba$ta_ds........to a pile of lumber that you could climb up on before the Dog......could get to you .......and then the same game going out except.....you could escape via the back exit into the laneway, almost directly behind my friend Paul Figueroa's house (which was on Rielle)  ....usually you got one of your other friends to make a dopey Kamakazi type run for one exit or the other .......and that's when you made your dash-to -freedom..........if you tried to get back out onto Gordon Av ,you had to Remember to leave yourself enough space to be able to lift the 'Flap'that hung down beneath the gate......cause it only opened one direction (in towards the yard)...........and that gave the beast enough time to maybe almost get your leg..........hahahahahaha   Have Fun & Remember Verdun

As my memory serves me on Wellington and Galt Ave was a City & District Bank. Then there was a french school (where the children were kidnapped a couple of years ago and then the City of Verdun city yard. I can't recall any lumber yard.   Reg Paine

You got right 'Reg' for the block you are describing ..the bank, the Richard school ,with the rink I used to skate on,.....then the Verdun Public Works Yard......then I believe some residential places ...beyond the yard.....as I said before I really only Remember the Lumberyard on Gordon Av....halfway up to Bannantyne........blah blah blah........then when you crossed Lasalle Blvd at Galt ..you came to the first  'Red Top on the Boardwalk' ....and the boardwalk went right between the Stadium Bleachers, & the French School which was a Modelling Agency at one time & Apparently now is a McDoanlds........Have Fun & Remember Verdun

That french school was a protestant Model school which was closed and the students were transferred to Bannantyne and Woodland schools. The principal of that school became the principal of Bannantyne school and his name was Mr.Larocque.He was a very disciplined individual the kind we need today in the school system and I always remembered him because when he spoke he sort of whistled when he spoke.   Have a good day.   Reggie Paine

Hi Steve (Give), When I was a kid, I often went with my dad at a lumber yard. As far as I can remember, it was on the east side of Galt (btwn Wellington & Verdun Av. ???). Was it W.H. Genest Lumber ??? or National Builders Supplies ??? or another name ? A search is needed here ! JMH

Having lived on Galt corner Bannantyne in the 40s and early 50s, I don't recall there been a Lumberyard on Galt. There was Dupuis et Fils on Church between Bannantyne and Champlain, and W.H. Genest Lumber on Lasalle near Wellington. I will do research on this and report back. Guy

Hi Les-f,   There was also a bakery in that area, do you recall this and what was the name? I will do some research at SHGV as we have the old issues of the Verdun Directory. I have to check the following: 1 - Lumberyard on Gordon.  2 - Bakery on Gordon 3 - Soft drink bottling plant at Verdun and LaSalle intersection (Corona)   Guy

Hello again   Guy 5479........I sort of Remember the Bakery being off of Rielle near bannantyne ,with an exit into the lane ,that was across from the Lumberyard.......at least I do Remember a seemingly large 'loading bay for trucks' to back up to ,( again off Rielle).........along time ago I'maybe wrong........Have  Fun & Remember Verdun...........

Les, I remember the KIK-Cola bottling plant being in the east end of Montreal. Didn't Corona bottle Eskimo & Ski flavored sodas? You could see the Orange Crush plant from the CNR train shortly after the train came out of the mountain tunnel a little way past the Mt. Royal Station. Pepsi opened that huge plant on Namur around 1957. It had the fastest bottling machines available at the time. They had three machines that each turned out 1,200 bottles per minute. They had a railing close to the machines from where you could watch. What a racket those three machines made but it was an amazing sight watching the Pepsi plant in operation. One worker at the plant told me that in the summertime they ran all three machines 24 hours per day.

The lumber yard on Galt between Bannantyne and Verdun was on the east side.  Can't remember the name (CRS) but it was a home renovation place. There were 2 woodlots (lumber yards) on Gordon between Verdun and Bannantyne.  The main office was located on the right (east) side with the overflow lot farther up the street on the left (west) side.  It was owned by the Leduc Bros.  One of the brothers used to live on Gordon above Bannantyne (corner of the lane).  They also owned a printing shop on Church just above Verdun Ave. Next on Gordon was a furniture wharehouse (name???), then Charlebois Glass at the end of the driveway right accross the street from the Bannantyne school playard. On Rielle(between Bannantyne and Verdun) was an engine re-building place and right next door was the big area for trucks to park.  That was called "Presto" , a wholesaler who used to supply convenience stores. My friend Andre Mado and I used to go there alot to pick up supplies for their store.  The Presto yard and the lumber yard were back-to-back with no laneway in between. Thats what I remember from the mid-60's. I don't remember a bakery in the area or we would've smelled it all the time. I used to live on the corner of Bannantyne and Gordon.  Hope this helps guys.   Mac

Hey Les_F I do remember on one of those streets obove Bannantyne and below Champlain  there was a place like a warehouse store for owners of small stores to buy their  goods to be resold . It had loading bay and was not situated near the road, cause there  was a plce for your vehicles to park. I remember  going there with Ralph Currie when i worked for  Currie's on Third And Verdun .Take care   Steve

It was POM Bakery. They didnt bake there but used it to park the wagons and horses after they finished their routes. This was on Gordon and the back on Rielle ended up being Presto. They were not operating at the same time. We would sneak in after school to see if they left cakes or anything in the wagons. They never did.

Archway Oatmeal cookies taste almost the same as the oatmeal cookies that POM used to sell. Two POM oatmeal cookies for 5 cents. POM jam tarts were a classic, one of a kind. I cannot remember POM having any cup cakes. I recall Christie's Bakery as the baker with the cup cakes. POM crumpets were fantastic. Recently I found crumpets in a Publix Grocery store in Florida that were from a baker in Vancouver. They're great !
