The whole time I was in school, if I remember correctly, definitely
elementary school (Woodland), corporal punishment was in effect. There were times, maybe a snowball fight
in the schoolyard (or something) when more than one were involved and he would
go from classroom to classroom and repeat this strapping. It not only scared the kid getting the
strap, it scared all the kids.
He went over the top and
lost his job for it.

Why was it that the chairs in the hall outside the principals office always seemed harder??..lol..sat in quite a few in my school days..
I can well remember corporal punishment in schools in Verdun. Both at Bannantyne Elementary and Verdun High School. I was at VHS in the 50's and the principal was an old nast guy named Dr. Grant. He used to wander the halls with a ledger in the crook of his arm. The strap was prominently sticking out of the top. We would get the strap for almost any small infraction and he kept it up until you cried. His secretary was named Miss (of course, they were all Miss) McMonagle and she was old and very mean.

hi Tommy, Miss McMonagle was not Dr. Grants secetary but the girls vice principal. I think she was even more nasty than Dr. Grant. If you wore the wrong colour blue sweater in winter she would rip it off your back. wrong colour sock, home you go, same for makeup, blouse etc. slacks in winter had to be taken off in the basement of the girls entrance. We were terrified of them yet we look back with fondness. patsy ginn ernst
