They are predicting an eruption shortly. They are now clearing all the areas and people within 15 miles of Mt St Helens. They say it will not be like 1980, but that it could be very large. Lets hope that people in the area get out as requested. In 1980 there were some people that thought it would not be bad and either stayed and died, or went up to the area just to see the eruptions. 57 people died. It sure makes life interesting. Hello Winnie3Ave , Winston .......when that initial blast in 1980, happened , it must have scared the crap putta you guys, You say your 35mi South of the mtn...? I was camping that weekend as my b-day is on the 16th of May , about twenty of us were camping at Pachena Bay (close to Bamfield BC) it's the beginning of the Westcoast Trail ....or the end of it depending on where you start.........hahaha my point being it's half way up Vancouver Island (the Island is just over 350miles long) So being North of Victoria......and we were awoken by the blast....of course we all had different thoughts on just what exactly the blast was (not my party.......hahaha) it was early Sunday Morning the 18th..... I thought it was Naval Exercises...etc etc...........So if we could here it that loud from where I was....then your house must have literally shook........have you any pictures of your property with all that Ash? it be great to see some if you could........I flew over it (rather around it) on my way to Vegas about a week after the initial eruption, and as you know it kept smoking for sometime afterwards..........the Haze continued here on the coast for at least a year afterwards........the following Summer was grey and dismal all summer long but ,I flew out of a place called Prince Rupert on the Northern coast of BC (not to far from the Alaska panhandle...blah blah blah) again my point being that as soon as we got above about 4000 ft ........the sky was as blue as blue can be with the Sunshinning like never before..........the low level haze blocked out all that Sun.........Remember the commercial ,,,,,,,,"it's not nice to fool with Mother Nature"........hahahah
Les_F. The mountain eruption was a very harrowing experience. But we here in Vancouver did not get the worse of it. As everyone knows, the ash went up about 12 miles and then around the world. The city of Toutle, which is just south got it very band. The snow melting and all the trees blown down caused the river to jam up and overflow, and wiped out everything in its path. The wind was blowing east and Spokane, Washington got so much ash, that they did everything they could to get rid of it, and it took months to do that. The one saving grace for us, was the fact the the eruption and land slide was to the north. If it had been to the south (which is much more populated), we would have been in very big trouble. The sound was deafening. there isn't anything I can compare it to. It was like a rumbling rolling artilary barrage, but constant. Winston Allison
