Does anyone remember ther little restaurant on Verdun Avenue between Galt and Church on the south side. It always looked like it was going to fall down but they sold the best hamburgers anywhere.

The name was Jacks and yes he made the best hambugers and he is still alive and i see him just about every day. He has not change a bit and looks younger every day.

I seem to remember a Laura Secord Ice Cream Restaurant in that section which is just around the corner from where I lived, on Galt at the corner of Bannantyne.
Did anyone ever go to the dances on 6 th ave between Wellington and LaSalle Blvd.They had a dance on Wed, night and Sat,night it was in a garage.I can not remember the guys name that ran the dances I think it cost $.25 to get in they played the old 78 records songs of the day.The last song he always played was good night sweetheart you would hope that your sweethaeat was there lol. I am having a good laugh that is a long time ago 1953-54-55 I think it might have been called the Optimist club ?
That was even earlier than 1953 it probably started around 1950 as I remember
going there twice a week. Those were the good days.

Just came across this item. Yes, it was the Optimist Club, and all I can remember about the guy who ran it is his first name "Tom". I believe he ownes a jewellery store. And, you're right! The last dance with Goodnight Sweetheart, and the only light on up in the DJ's "box" up near the ceiling in the corner of the room near the exit, was awaited by all!. The other use for this "hall" was the CKVL radio show "Call Me Uncle". It was broadcast "live" from there. It was an amateur show every Saturday morning, and almost anyone could get to sing on the radio if they wanted. There were a few real good singers who would always get on, in fact two of them ended up having their own show on CKVL on Sunday nights. Their names come to mind as I finger these letters out, Robert McLaughlin and June (not too sure about the first name) Carter. Incidentally, when Robert (from the "POINT") was in his late teens/early twenties he was charged with manslaughter after he got into a fight with a guy who died as a result of his head banging against the sidewalk. Boy! Memories! 70 years of them with the fifties being the among the best!
About the fights at the Optimist. Some were started by the POINT guys, but there was another group from what was called the "West End". I believe they lived in the Guy St., Chalevoix, Notre Dame St area.
That was Lowneys.Having an icecream from there was a treat.It was at the back of the drugstore that was on the corner of Church and Verdun.

Hi Maggie for some of our BC members ( maybe evrywhere too) ,....If you have a library card,.you can acess almost all Canadian Newspapers,,without subscribing ,.allowing you to read te full text,...this being said,.it usually takes a day to add the most recent addition of any magazine,or newspaper,....... You may want to check your local libraries as well to see if they offer this feature,.( I would imagine they do),........it may be worth a try for those who like to keep in touch with all sorts of information sources,....... also you can select and put on hold any books you may want ....( but that another story).............Hope it helps ,some of those members interested in reading the Complete Articles,..in some of the on-line papers,........ of course Canada.Com......is a primary source for many of Canada's Newspapers,...but not all content of the paper is available without subscription..........Check it out if like,.....look up your local lbrary,.
