Here is the reunion place, an old Church on Wellington just East of Canadian Tire on the opposite  side of the street, closer to the overpass at May Street?.................................. ....the side door is on the right-east side down a dark lonely lane............enjoy............m.p.u.

Hi MPU  good memory boost I had forgotten the look of that old building,...I seem to recall another church-like building ,that looked similar to that one,........but I'm not sure where ,.I think Willibrord or something like that near Lasalle.....(but I'm only guessing,.the trim was black agains the brick,.....??? I can Remember going to the old Canadian Tire,in the very early 60's ,it had a garage down the side of it,...and it was just neat to go there when the oldman needed some part for the jalopy,............hahahahaha  Also a good friend of my oldman's lived right near that church (not far anyway),....the Hastings family,.........and there was a pile of them ,.        Thanks for taking pics again for us,....I zoomed in on the spot yesterday (Google Earth).........so it's nice to see the 'real side'.............   Muchos Gracias                                             Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Les, there is another Church a bit further west on Wellington on the same corner as CTC, this street is now called Henri-Duhamel, a lot of these streets have been renamed to French names. I don't remember the name of this church, and did not think of taking a picture of it this morning. I should make a project of photographing every Church in Verdun, this would add up to quite a few pics. I will add this to my list of things to do.       m.p.u.

The Salvation army "church" was between LaSalle Blvd and Wellington on Willibrord. I remember the building being almost flat-faced with the entrance at ground level. But of course, I never even noticed the fish and chip/store on Willibrord above Wellington so don't take my word for it. I will wait for Ralph's new project!

sharon_starr MSN said...

MPU, wait till you see the yard surrounding what was that church now! haha I visited my brother last Sunday and he lives on Rushbrooke St. right around the corner from that church. Whatever it is now, it's got someone's idea of hand-made abstarct art/sculptures in it...lol. Wish like hell I'd taken a pic.

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Sharon, I will check it out and take some pics next week. I work in Lasalle so it is only a slight detour, actually I check out Verdun on a regular basis.....lived there and loved it for 14-15 years......Ralph.

sharon_starr MSN said...

Maggie you're right, here's the pic I took last year of the Salvation Army Church you're talking about. Course those doors arent the ones that were there way back when...lol. I remember them being big heavy wooden ones. Ok...question...You see that small square that's under the little bulletin board? You can see that there was obviously something there at one time and it was bricked in. Didn't there used to be those big square glass cubes along there? I went to "Brownies" at that church....omg 40 years ago!

maggiemck MSN said...

I went to Brownies at Bannantyne. Aunt Frances was "Brown Owl" and Aunt Bev was "Tawny Owl". I was to attend Guides at the Salvation Army but it didn't work out for me. I would suspect there were glass bricks in that area once upon a time. I can't picture them right now. Does anyone else have "total recall"?

Sharon. I use to go to The Salvation Army at the Verdun Corps on Willibrod. My brother and mother also. That was in the 50's & 60's. Also went to the Corps in the Point. Alan Leishman went to that one also. I remember my mother was at the Home League meeting at the Verdun Corps  in 1960. I was In The US Marine Corps and just finished boot camp in November. I came home for Christmas without telling anyone I was coming home. I went in the USMC at 253 pounds, came out of boot camp at 183. I went to the Verdun Corps, and someone told my mother that there was someone to see her. I was standing at the top of the stairs, and my mother looked up, said; "Oh my Gosh.", and fainted.

Hi gang,      I just want to give the straight dope on some of your posts: Les, You got the right building. We give space to the Alcoholics Anonymous Group on Wednesday Evenings. They do wonderful work. Remember, we're Anglican. When they overdose on wine at Mass, we send them down to the A.A. boys. HaHa Glenn, if you have time drop in. I will be in the hall all day Saturday and most likely Maggie will too. Possibly some others, I'm making the whole building available all day in case Maggie wants to prepare some things. Be careful to call it Verdun High School. There was a Verdun Protestant High School for a period of time. M.P.U. Thanks for the picture. I don't have a picture since we erected the Cross over the door and yes the trim was black. I had it done red to match the doors. The little Church on the corner of Duhamel (why they changed it from River St. I'll never know) has been sold to some Indians. There is a sign in the backyard saying, Mohawk artwork or something like that. Someone mentioned a 'dark lonely lane'. Actually the back and sides of the building are well lit. I will check in case there's a light missing. Thanks for mentioning. M P U If you would like to get a picture of the hall to post, give me a call. I'm at home every evening at 514-767-1449. There is plenty of parking across the street in Maxi super large parking lot and they do not have tow away.      Ed

Aw mannnnn...that got me all teary-eyed, Winnie.  A mother's love for her son is a very special one - I speak from experience. Yeah my hubby is a ex-sailor and he told me a similar story about losing all kinds of weight after he enlisted and then went to Vietnam. Not as much as YOU did tho....wow!

With reference to that church, corner Wellington & Henri-Duhamel (aka: River St.) used to be called Bethanie United Church.  My family were members there for a very long time until the membership went far enough down that we had to close the church about 10 years ago.  It was only 1 of 4 French-Protestant Churches in Quebec.  I beleive we covered this topic in another thread.   Mac

edbro68 MSN said...

Yes Mac, that's right. It was bought by Korean group who kept it for about ten years and sold it last month to some Indians who have turned the yard into a display of Mohawk Artwork. Ed

The church on Wellington street was originally the Wm MacGillivary (?) Funeral Home, and one of the sons was Johnny, who went to Model School on LaSalle Blvd.   Gord

edbro68 MSN said...

Thanks Gord, You're absolutely right. Also thanks to MPU for the picture. It's important to get the right information. Maggies is trying very hard to organize this reunion and it's easy to get people lost. If we post pictures of other Churches (such as Salvation Army) we may have people from all over North America running all over Verdun looking for the reunion. This thread is for reunions. Ed

maggiemck MSN said...

Thanks Ed, I was hoping we could get this thread back onto the topic. I am beginning to get requests for tickets....YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! This is to be quite a simple affair but it would be nothing without participation of the class members! If anyone here at VC can pass the word on to friends and family, it would be appreciated. They can contact me at mumagain@hotmail.com or call Ed for more info.

multipurposeutensil MSN said...

Ed, I will give you a call sometime, and take you up on your offer to take some inside pics for you. Might drum up more interest for the reunion. I regret not having gone to my 30th VHS reunion in 1972. One of my favorite teachers from VHS....Gerry Curran was there, would have loved to reminisce about the FLQ crisis with him. He actually made History class interesting............. .....m.p.u.

edbro68 MSN said...

Maggie, it doesn't matter whether it's ten or fifty. They'll have a good time. During summer, The hall is empty during the week. If you're in town and want to meet with your advance committee you can use the hall any day. Ed

well, it's the 21st of July. The reunion is now open to "others". If you would like to attend this event, email me, I will send payment information to you.
