I have written to MSN and am waiting for an answer on this. The article does not mention the chat feature in MSN Groups. Keep your fingers crossed! We may be spared!

share to you that " MSN Groups" chat rooms will not be affected by the
MSN Chat change to a subscription service. "MSN Groups" chat rooms will
continue to be free to those who are members of the individual chat
