Indian Totem Poll

Hi Everbody,  Does anybody remember the Totem Poll Between the police station and 2nd ave. on Lasalle Blvd. It was in a yard that everybody cut through to go play in the park and on that old fire truck. I have always wondered what happened to it. It should have been protected and not moved or dystroyed. Now there is apartments there.   Dannyb--

Danny... wouldn't that be the same tree that we were talking about just last night? It was a tree that was carved with all kinds of faces on it? I agree, I think it should have been preserved too. It was there for at least 2 generations of kids I would think... Luv, Sharon

I wish there were one or two dates along with some posts. V.C. members
are varied in age, and it is difficult to place the stories in time.
For instance when I was a kid on 2nd Avenue, there was no city hall in
Willibrord park. The grass park extended to the children's playground
fence and beyond the P.G., was the baseball/hockey park. If I remember
correctly, there were two baseball back stops and three rinks. Two
hockey rinks, and one for general skating. Hockey players would chase
the fancy skaters off the hockey rinks because their skates would cut
up the ice. The care taker would chase us off the ice if we were
wearing 'billy boots'.
I remember the totem poll behind the YMCA on Gordon Avenue. Eagle wings
and all.
Behind the YMCA were open fields, which became a swamp in the spring
melt. Good fun.

Hi Danny...I found it. It was Les who mentioned it initially. Here's the part in his post that covers it...   "Hi Sharon, it's great to hear from a new source of Verdun Memories......the park you spoke of behind the firehall/police station,  had a firetruck for quite awhile, the park only had a few pathways (paved ashphalt pathwathways) and a few gravel ones when it first opened, then graduated into a kids park...do you remember when it or beside it I should say,The carnival would set up,with it's ferris wheel & various other rides..........how about the specially carved tree right behind the fire station, where the rumour was that the firemen had carved all these faces on a seemingly dead old tree (Dannyb you may remember that??)It was there for years,I think it may have been eradicated when the New Police Station went in(late 60's,early70's) "   IS that the totem pole that you're talking about, Danny? Luv, Sharon

Sounds like a good idea to me Bill. I can understand what you mean cuz the Verdun you just described is not at all the Verdun that I knew...lol. I was born in '59 so the Verdun of my growing up years was in the 60's and 70's...ok yeahhhhhhh....a bit oif the 80's too. hehe Guess I WAS still growing up then. Nowadays I'm just growing OUT LOL. Hi Sharon,  Thank you,  It is most likely that we are talking about the same pole. Although I don't think the fire station was there then. The Police station was there but the fire station was on Osborne and Verdun. They tour down the old police station and built a new one with a fire station attached.I don't remember the fire station there then. I need help with the question about the fire station.  Dannyb--
